Environmental Responsibility: Taking Steps to Protect Our Planet

November 19, 2019 • 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Tornadoes, fires, hurricanes, floods— all signs that our planet is in revolt. Environmentalist Terra Missildine will speak about how her mission to protect the Earth began and why it’s important for everyone to commit to doing so. She will also outline what individuals, organizations, and legislators can do to begin to bring about positive change and environmental healing. Terra will offer samples of earth-friendly products.

RUBBERBANDance Group: Ever So Slightly

Montreal-based RUBBERBANDance Group makes its UMass Amherst debut with the work Ever So Slightly, an exploration of the daily challenge to find balance and reflection in
our lives. Combining live musicians with the company’s distinct blend of contemporary, ballet, and hip- hop, the work conveys all the energy contained in urgency, revolt, chaos, and flight.

The Philadelphia Dance Company returns to UMass Amherst in celebration of its 50 years as one of the premiere African-American dance troupes, presenting iconic PHILADANCO works, as well as new choreography engaged with today’s most important social issues. Among the new work is Endangered Species, a heart-wrenching piece that takes on police violence towards African-American males.

Recognized as “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world” for 60 years, the company has shared amazing work by Ailey himself and over 90 other choreographers. This performance will feature a mixture of new work, as well as the critically acclaimed Revelations.
