The challenge: On a daily basis, Carol Baj was presented with our residents’ many and individual requests for assistance. That ranged from needing a ride to a gentle reminder. Carol liked to say that no matter the question, the answer was always “Yes.” Then, she would figure out how to make things happen. Carol’s goal—and the goal for all of our employees—is to improve the daily lives of our residents.

Our assist: In addition to providing health and wellness programs, entertainment, and assists with medical care, we also respond with respect to residents’ changing needs and their daily desires. We provide rides to and from doctor’s appointments, the grocery store, the veterinarian’s office, and the mall. Carol knew how to listen to residents, and when they felt embarrassed or self-conscious—such as after locking their keys inside their mailbox—she would tell them, “You forgot your keys because you were talking with someone. You are enjoying your life!”

The result: Many of our staff members spend the bulk of their careers with us. They agree that Glenmeadow is a family, a place to call home. The longevity and staff continuity allow our residents to build healthy, trusting, long-term relationships with those who care for them. “There’s friendship. There’s camaraderie,” Carol says. “It’s a very caring staff, in every department. The cook will stop and get down on his knee to talk with someone and tell her what’s for dinner. It’s touching. That’s every day.”
