As one of the state’s earliest Life Plan Communities, we offer independent and assisted living for older adults looking to live a maintenance-free, active lifestyle with a plan in place for future care. Our home care services provide personalized support in the comfort of your own home. Our Nonprofit Status Matters

As a nonprofit organization, Glenmeadow’s priority is reinvesting in our community. We have an open-door policy that encourages direct access to staff and leadership. We are all right here, working together, every day. Our board of directors includes community leaders, Glenmeadow residents, and resident family members, giving our community a real voice in how we grow and evolve. And, because we don’t answer to corporate shareholders, our focus stays where it belongs, on the wellbeing of the older adults who call Glenmeadow home.

1800

Elderly individuals without family or means were sent to live on what was called “the poor farm.” The conditions in these working farms were deplorable and they were feared.

1884

A group of civic leaders raised funds to purchase a house on Main Street in Springfield’s South End, establishing The Springfield Home for Aged Women.

1886

Upon opening, the safe and dignified Main Street residence provided shelter for sixteen women from the community who had neither family nor means.

As demand grew, a larger facility was built at Chestnut and Carew streets.

1960

The Springfield Home for Aged Women changed its name to Chestnut Knoll.

1992

Glenmeadow began admitting men.

A 23-acre parcel in Longmeadow was acquired to build a new community—combining independent and assisted living apartments with shared common areas in one building—pioneering what was then known as a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), now called a Life Plan Community.

1997

Existing residents moved into the new campus, and around that time the organization became known as Glenmeadow.

2002

The organization launched Glenmeadow at Home, offering personal care, companionship, and home care services to older adults living at home throughout Greater Springfield, including those who live at Glenmeadow.

Today, Glenmeadow is thriving, providing the highest quality independent living, assisted living, respite care, and home care through Glenmeadow at Home.
